The majority of comments I have received on my stories include the terms “drugs” or “drug-fueled.”

I would like to propose alternative explanations, in descending order of anachronism:

  1. Nearfield neural-frequency interference
  2. Brain implants
  3. Drugs
  4. Satellites
  5. Radio
  6. Mesmerism
  7. Telegraphy
  8. Witchcraft
  9. Possession
  10. Imagination
